Dr. Kakkis is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist
specializing in the treatment of hormone disturbances. She has helped develop
multiple women's health centers throughout Southern California, and was the
President and Chief Executive Officer of WomanKind: A Medical Group, Inc., from
1981 until 1999. In June of 1999, Dr. Kakkis opened a comprehensive midlife
center that provides gynecological care, mammography, ultrasound, bone density
and support service. She completed her medical degree, internship and residency
in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. She is an Associate Professor of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at UC Irvine College of Medicine and spends time
teaching medical students and residents about the unique problems of women. Dr.
Kakkis is a champion of women's health, and founded WomanKind to provide
comprehensive health services to women in a nurturing environment and consults
regularly on the issues of women's health care delivery.
A nationally acclaimed educator, author, leader and expert
in women's health, Dr. Kakkis is a sought-after keynote speaker, television and
talk radio guest. Her television appearances include interviews on CBS, NBC and
ABC news, CNN, OCN, and several guest slots on CVI Cable TV in Long Beach, CA.
She has contributed to pieces for Vogue, Redbook, Harper's, Aspire Women's
Health Magazine and The Medical Tribune, among others. She has also authored
articles in Orange County Business Journal, Southern California Breast Cancer
Connection, Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center Quarterly, and the Long Beach
Press Telegram.
Included among Dr. Kakkis' speaking engagements are over
30 appearances at bookstores, conferences, forums, universities and medical
centers, where she has spoken on a range of topics, including women's health,
hormones, menopause, self esteem, and business topics. She specializes in
motivational speaking and leadership seminars for women of all ages. Dr. Kakkis
has also served as a speaker and advisor to the Corporate Leadership Conference
in Women's, Maternal and Child Health. She is the recipient of the
"Women-Owned Business Enterprise Award," sponsored by the City of Long
Beach, the "In Service to Women Award," presented by Soroptimist
International, and the Orange County Business Journal's "Business Woman of
the Year."
Dr. Kakkis' professional affiliations include: Fellow of
the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), California
Medical Association (CMA), American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), North
American Menopause Society (NAMS), Women Incorporated. One of her long-time
favorite commitments is her membership on the board of directors at Interval
House, a domestic violence shelter. She has served as the chairwoman of
"Les Bal des Papillons," the Annual Fundraiser Ball for this charity
for several years.
